Cognitive and Adaptive Assessment

A cognitive and adaptive assessment is typically recommended when there are concerns in relation to a child’s development or when there is a possibility of a general learning difficulty, such as an intellectual disability. It focuses on evaluating various aspects of a child’s cognitive functioning, including areas like memory, attention span, language abilities, and problem-solving skills. In addition, this assessment explores key developmental and adaptive areas, such as physical growth, emotional and social interactions, and communication abilities.

Occupational Therapy Services

Our Occupational Therapy (OT) service is unique to each child or young person. The OT works collaboratively with the child/family to set meaningful goals and make a plan for therapy. OT is an evidence-based health science which focuses on meaningful occupation – the things that people do that have meaning in everyday life. For children/young people, occupations can range from everyday tasks like brushing teeth or dressing, to participating in school activities, playing, making friends or engaging in hobbies.

A detailed initial assessment is used to gather information about current abilities and to identify any underlying reasons for presenting difficulties. The OT will use standardised and non-standardised assessments to gather information, set goals and formulate a plan/therapy program to achieve these goals in collaboration with the child/young person and family.

Behaviour Therapy Services

Families who seek support regarding the positive development of their young person’s behavioural, emotional regulation, anger/anxiety management skills, are encouraged to  schedule an initial intake session with our Behaviour Therapist.

During the intake session, information will be gathered in order to support and empower parents in achieving the desired outcomes for their child. The goal is to support parents their understanding of their child/young person’s unique behavioural and emotional profile, and provide strategies and techniques which may support their emotional/behavioural progression.

We understand that each child/young person, family, and set of circumstances are unique. Therefore, it is important that the form of support meets the needs of each family unit. From our experience, some children benefit from individual sessions with our behaviour therapist, while for others, it would be most appropriate to provide consultation and advice/training to parents/caregivers.

Depending on your child’s needs, support may involve direct work with the young person, parent consultations, or both.

    1. Assessment: Explore challenges and gather background.

    2. Goal Setting: Collaborative plan development.

    3. Skill Building: Learn techniques and behavioural strategies.

    4. Homework: Practice in real-life scenarios.

    5. Progress Monitoring: Regular review and adjustments.
